Massachusetts to Pass Law Requiring Head Injury Education Program for High Schools
July 9, 2010 | Massachusetts Senate

The Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives has passed a bill meant to better protect student athletes from head injuries. Bill S2469, sponsored by Massachusetts Senator Steven Baddour, will require the Department of Public Health to create a brain injury educational program designed for coaches, parents, trainers and school doctors, who will participate in the program annually.

According to the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts, an estimated 60,000 American high school students suffer sports-related concussions each year. Unfortunately many of these athletes are encouraged to "shake off" a potential head injury. The new bill, expected to be signed into law in time for the fall football season, will hopefully reduce the number of high school sports-related head injuries each year.
